Data Files Description

File Name

GGS_W1-V.4.3.&W2-V.1.3_Var. Av..NSDstat

Contents of Files

This file documents the availability of variables across GGS country datasets published in Nesstar. It contains all the GGS variables included in all released waves and country datasets (including country-specific variables). Variables have observations equal to the GGS codes of each country dataset where they are present. For example, if a variable is available in the dataset "GGS_Wave1_France", that variable will have an observation equal to "15.1 France W1". Similarly, if a variable is available in the dataset "GGS_Wave2_France", that variable will have an observation equal to "15.2 France W2".

Version

Variable availability across all harmonized datasets published in Nesstar, GGS Wave1, version 4.3. and GGS Wave 2, version 1.3.
18 countries are available for Wave 1, and 13 countries for Wave 2, plus the German-Turkish subsample (both for Wave1 and Wave2). In total, variable availability across 33 datasets is documented.

Notes

Across the dataset the following country abbreviations are used:
"11.1-Bulgaria W1"
"11.2-Bulgaria W2"
"12.1-Russia W1"
"12.2-Russia W2"
"13.1-Georgia W1"
"13.2-Georgia W2"
"14.1-Germany W1"
"14.2-Germany W2"
"14.51-Germany-Turkish subsample W1"
"14.52-Germany-Turkish subsample W2"
"15.1-France W1"
"15.2-France W2"
"16.1-Hungary W1"

Notes

VARIABLE LABELS and NAMES
Variables have the prefix "x". The letter "x" stands for any available GGS wave.
When a variable is available ONLY in WAVE 2 datasets its label ends with "(W2 only). This may apply either to variables that are not asked in Wave 1 questionnaire - e.g., the variables of GGS Wave 2 section "9. Activity and Education History" that have the prefix "xn" and certain country-specific variables - or to those variables that are in both questionnaires but that are not available in Wave 1 datasets.
In order to increase transparency, for country-specific variables we indicate in the variable label the name of the country to which the variable refers to. This in addition to the country-specific code which appears in the variable name (just like in each GGS country dataset). For example, the variable "xweight_1501 - Country specific population weight (France only)" has the GGS code for France (i.e., "1501") in the name plus the indication that it only refers to this country in the label.

VARIABLE GROUPS
Variables are grouped by subject. The grouping follows the sections and subsections of the GGS Wave 1 codebook.
Variable groups that only include Wave 2 variables end with "(Wave 2 only)".
